The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link project will provide more than 100 000 jobs, Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa said on Monday.
”During the construction phase more than 57 000 jobs will be created. A further 39 000 jobs will be created during infrastructure development around the stations,” Shilowa said at the opening of the provincial legislature in Johannesburg.
In addition, he said at least 2 000 permanent jobs will be created when the train becomes operational.
The project’s preferred bidder, out of two shortlisted consortia, will be appointed by November, financial negotiations will be concluded by April 2005 and construction will start soon after that.
”By 2009 the train will be carrying passengers,” Shilowa said in a speech prepared for delivery at the opening.
Although there have been changes to the route, Shilowa said the project remains ”firmly on track”.
”Due to the recommendations arising from the environmental impact assessment we have realigned the route and effected certain adjustments to the plan.
”This has necessitated amendments to the initial project timetable,” he said.
The train will link Pretoria, Johannesburg and Johannesburg International airport.
Shilowa also bound his government to fulfilling all pre-election promises of democracy and prosperity.
”The Gauteng provincial government is ready to put shoulder to the wheel to realise our objective of a better life for all,” he said. — Sapa
