Pirates, Santos to face Cameroonian clubs

South African football giants Orlando Pirates and Santos have been drawn against Cameroonian clubs in the African Confederation Cup fourth knockout round.

Pirates will play against Sable Batie, and Santos are pitted against Canon Yaounde. The first-leg matches will be played on the weekend of July 9 to 11.

Return legs will take place on the weekend of July 23 to 25 with the winners going through to the group stages. The group stages are scheduled to start in August.

Pirates qualified for the Confederation Cup after failing to book themselves a place in the lucrative African Champions League group stages two weeks ago.

This was after Buccaneers, the 1995 Champions League winners of the competition, were defeated by Bakili Bullets of Malawi in Blantyre last month.

Santos were one of the two South African football sides who competed in the Confederation Cup when the 2004 edition of the tournament started with the preliminary rounds in March.

The other local side was Wits University, who were eliminated by Transfoot Leopards of Madagascar during the first round. — Sapa
