Vlakplaas boss too tired for trial

Gideon Nieuwoudt’s amnesty hearing was adjourned on Wednesday because convicted murderer Eugene de Kock was too tired to testify, SABC radio news reported.

The former Vlakplaas commander had driven from Pretoria by road, leader of evidence Mokotedi Mpshe told the Port Elizabeth High Court.

De Kock was supposed to give evidence on Wednesday in connection with an application for amnesty for the Motherwell car bombing in December 1989.

He will instead appear on Thursday morning.

Nieuwoudt, together with former policemen Wahl du Toit and Marthinus Ras, is applying for amnesty for the murder of Warrant Officer Glen Mgoduka, Constable Desmond Mapipa, Sergeant Amos Faku and askari Charles Jack.

Evidence at the trial was that they were killed because they had links with the African National Congress.

They were bombed on their way to Motherwell to observe a house where a trained activist was believed to be hiding.

Nieuwoudt concluded his testimony on Monday, saying he had not double-checked information given to him by an overseas agent because he trusted him.

The advocate for the victims’ families, Kessie Naidu, said Nieuwoudt was saying this to avoid being jailed.

The hearing was adjourned in April this year to allow Nieuwoudt, a former security police colonel, time to seek medical treatment. — Sapa
