India dismiss Bangladesh in Asia Cup

Left-arm seamer Irfan Pathan and Sachin Tendulkar snared three wickets each on Wednesday to help India dismiss Bangladesh for 177 runs in the first match of the cricket Asia Cup second round.

Electing to field first after winning the toss, India took immediate control of the match, claiming two wickets before the runs total passed 10 runs.

In the third over of the match, Pathan penetrated the defence of Bangladesh skipper Habibul Bashar and clean bowled him for two. He dismissed number three Rajin Saleh leg-before-wicket for a first-ball duck.

Opener Mohammad Ashraful and number-four batsman Alok Kapali showed signs of a recovery with a valuable 46-run stand for the third wicket in 59 balls. However, seamer Ashish Nehra had Kapali caught behind for 10 runs in the 13th over.

Ashraful and Faisal Hossain resisted the Indian attack briefly with a patient 32-run stand before offspinner Harbhajan Singh trapped Hossain leg-before-wicket for 17 with the total at 92.

Ashraful, the top scorer for Bangladesh, was the next to be dismissed without any addition to the total. Ashraful was run out for 35 runs facing 69 balls including three fours.

Number-10 batsman Abdur Razzak scored a 25-ball 22, while Manjurul Islam Rana and Khaled Mahmud scored 21 runs each.

Pathan recorded 3-32 in 8,1 overs while Tendulkar bowled 10 tidy overs and returned 3-35.

India’s bowlers conceded as 37 runs as extras, with fast-bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji bowling 16 wides in his seven-over spell. — Sapa-AP
