Six arrested for parliamentary travel scam

Six people, believed to be the owners of Cape Town travel agencies, have been arrested by the Scorpions in connection with a parliamentary travel-voucher scam.

Scorpions spokesperson Sipho Ngwema said the six were at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court and should appear shortly.

Former National Assembly Speaker Frene Ginwala said last year that fraud by six travel agencies then under investigation could amount to more than R4-million.

Later reports put the amount at R15-million.

Ginwala said there was no evidence that MPs had acted ”with intent”.

However, news reports said MPs apparently exchanged vouchers meant only for travel for hotel accommodation for themselves and their families, to hire cars and even for cash.

In other cases, vouchers were allegedly altered by a travel agent to a more expensive destination than the one actually travelled to by the MP. — Sapa
