Zimbabwe police on Saturday searched the Harare home of opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai for ”weapons of war”, his spokesperson said.
”They found nothing. They searched his four-bedroom house. They went literally into every room,” William Bango said. He could not confirm if the police had a search warrant.
Tsvangirai, the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, is still awaiting judgement in a trial for treason.
According to Bango, the police said the search was in connection with an incident earlier this month in the rural town of Mvurwi, when opposition supporters clashed with youths from the ruling party.
The opposition at the time claimed that the incident was an attack targeted at Tsvangirai.
”The accusation is that Tsvangirai has an arsenal of arms at his home, some of which were used when his entourage was attacked in Mvurwi,” said Bango. He denied the claim.
Police spokesperson Wayne Bvudzijena said he did not have any information on the police search. — Sapa-AFP
