Church on wheels for the Russian faithful

The Moscow diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church has commissioned a church on a truck that will be able to travel across isolated regions to reach those who have no houses of worship of their own, Itar-Tass news agency reported on Tuesday.

The church will be built on a 15m Kamaz truck base and will include a dome, the report said.

The building will include altars, a choir section, a library and a tiny lounge for two, and could take in about 100 worshipers at a time, the report said.

The church on wheels should be built within the next three months.

The Russian Orthodox Church has seen a revival in the post-Soviet era but has complicated relations with the Roman Catholic Church and other denominations, which it accuses of trying to win over the country’s believers.

A similar travelling church has also been recently put on a train and sent across Russia, making visits to Siberia and other outlying regions. — Sapa-AFP
