R250 000 reward offered in Leigh Matthews’s case

A reward of up to R250 000 was offered on Saturday for information about those responsible for the kidnap and murder of student Leigh Matthews.

”A cash reward of up to R250 000 has been offered for information leading to the identification, arrest and successful prosecution of the person or persons responsible for the Johannesburg student, Leigh Matthews,” a statement from those offering the reward said.

The reward was put up by concerned community activists, groups of individuals, and captains of industry, said Mike Freestone, managing director of Revert, a risk management company assisting in the investigation.

The body of the 21-year-old student from Bond University in Sandton was found in the veld at Walkerville Manor, south of Johannesburg, on July 21. She was last seen alive leaving the university campus on Wednesday July 9.

”We are working very closely with the South African Police Services,” Freestone said.

”Public participation in law enforcement in all forms of crime prevention is crucial and we hope the reward will motivate someone who has information about this crime to step forward and bring new and useful information to this investigation.”

People who want to provide information while remaining anonymous would be given a confidential reference, which they can quote should they be rewarded.

”Leigh was last seen walking from her class at Bond, allegedly going to her white Toyota Tazz. She was dressed in blue jeans and maroon polo-neck top. She was 1,7-metres with long blond hair,” the statement said.
