Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have signed memoranda of understanding to ”harmonise” transport and mining development between the two countries.
Zimbabwe’s foreign minister Stan Mudenge said on Wednesday the agreements would lead to joint mineral exploration and mining activities in the DRC.
”We need concrete action, failing which we must fire our officials,” Mudenge said.
”We’re expected to come up with proposals on how to overcome existing challenges in the fields of health, energy and power, mining, transport, trade and finance.”
Zimbabwe already imports electricity from the DRC’s state-owned Snel generator. The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority owes Snel an estimated $5-million.
Meanwhile, the DRC is also in discussion with South African power generator Eskom. The venture could see the construction of a 35 000 megawatt power generator on the Congo River by 2007. – Sapa
