Thatcher’s family slip out of Cape Town

The family of Mark Thatcher have quit his Cape Town home, bound for the United States, SABC radio news reported on Monday night.

Thatcher was arrested in South Africa last week on suspicion of financing a coup attempt in oil-rich Equatorial Guinea. The son of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher is effectively under house arrest in the plush Constantia residence until he pays a R2-million bond.

Thatcher’s Texan wife Diane and two children left their house on Monday evening, speeding past waiting journalists and through rush hour traffic escorted by guards in a second vehicle.

The family drove to Cape Town International airport where they were taken to the check-in desks and away from the cameras, SABC reported. – Sapa
