The Democratic Alliance has welcomed the appointment of Silas Ramaite as the new acting National Director of Public Prosecutions, saying he has a tough crime-busting profile.
Ramaite was formerly deputy to Bulelani Ngcuka, who vacated the national director post on Tuesday.
”The DA applauds President Thabo Mbeki’s decision to appoint … Silas Ramaite as the new acting National Director of Public Prosecutions.
”We hope that the appointment will become permanent, as the DA has been calling on the president to steer away from re-deploying a high-profile African National Congress political cadre to do this job,” DA justice spokesperson Shaila Camerer said in a statement on Wednesday.
The DA wished Ramaite well and trusted he would work to affirm and strengthen the independence and integrity of one of the pillars of South Africa’s criminal justice system.
”Ramaite has a tough crime-busting rather than political profile, and has apparently done a good job while Ngcuka’s deputy. He is Ngcuka’s own choice as successor,” Camerer said. — Sapa
