Teacher shot dead at school by boyfriend

A man shot dead his girlfriend, a 31-year-old schoolteacher, before committing suicide at the Newlands East Secondary School in Durban on Thursday.

Police said the 35-year-old man went to the teacher’s classroom on Thursday morning, called her outside and shot her in the head before turning the gun on himself.

Police spokesperson Inspector Gugu Sabela said the bodies were discovered by her pupils who ran outside after they heard three shots fired.

When police arrived at the school the pupils were hysterical. They are currently being counselled by caregivers from the Newlands East police station.

She said according to other teachers, their colleague and her boyfriend had been in a stormy relationship since they were teenagers. They had a 13-year-old child. — Sapa
