Two-time US Open champion Retief Goosen of South Africa shot a 3-under-par 67 on Sunday but couldn’t catch Japan’s Hideki Kase, who fired a final round 65 to win the Suntory Open.
Kase recovered from a bogey on the first hole with six birdies at the Sobu Country Club to finish at 13-under 267 for a three-stroke lead over compatriots Tomohiro Kondo, Toru Taniguchi and Katsuya Nakagawa.
Goosen, who started the final round five shots off the lead, also bogeyed the first hole and bounced back with four birdies for a four-day total of 6-under 274 and a share of seventh place.
”I didn’t play as good as I would have liked,” said Goosen.
”There are a lot of good players on the Japanese tour and like everywhere else in the world you have to be on top of your game to win here.”
Overnight co-leader YE Yang of South Korea offset a pair of bogeys with two birdies for an even-par 70 and a share of fifth place.
The 72-hole tournament offered a winner’s prize of $185 000. – Sapa-AP
