Banyana crash to their third defeat

Banyana Banyana’s disastrous campaign in the fourth African Womens Championship ended yet with another defeat after the unfancied Ethiopians beat them 2-1 at Caledonian stadium on Friday. It was Banyana’s third consecutive defeat since the start of the tournament.

They lost their first two games 3-0 to Ghana and 2-1 against Zimbabwe.

Meanwhile Ghana beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in another game at the Germiston Stadium.

The Black Queens of Ghana and Ethiopia are through to the semi-finals of the tournament where eight African countries are battling it out for the honours.

Ghana ended their third group stage campaign with nine points from their three games.

The Ghanaians became the only country from to go through with a hundred percent unbeaten record.

The other two semi-finals will be decided on Saturday.

The South Africans went into the tournament ill-prepared. They only assembled ten days prior to the start of the tournament despite having played their last match almost ten months ago when they lost to Nigeria in the Olympic Athens qualifier.

”We did not deserve to do well because the team was not ready. The other thing is that we had too many injuries especially in the last two games against Zimbabwe and Ethiopia,” said SA caretaker coach Augusto Palacios after Friday’s match. – Sapa
