Policeman shot and killed in Khayelitsha

A policeman was killed by armed robbers in Khayelitsha who were trying to steal his firearm, police said on Friday.

Constable Chimani Lucwaba was driving with a colleague along Sigenele Road on Thursday evening when he was approached by four men, one of whom was armed, said police spokesperson Captain Billy Jones.

The men threatened Lucwaba, and demanded his firearm. He was then shot in the head, and died on the scene.

His colleague was pulled out of the vehicle and searched, but he was unharmed.

The men got away with Lucwaba’s 9mm pistol.

Lucwaba is survived by his wife and three children, aged seven, five, and one, said Jones.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Mzwandile Petros expressed his sincere condolences to Lucwaba’s family: ”We grieve the lost of one our colleagues.”

He said a group of experienced investigators were investigating the attack, and asked any member of the public with information to contact the police. – Sapa
