All’s well on day one of matric exams

No discrepancies or irregularities involving the first day of the matric exams had been reported by noon on Monday, Minister of Education Naledi Pandor said in Pretoria.

Demanding a daily report on matric exams from each province, Pandor said so far all was going well.

She said all matters concerning logistics, delivery and security had been attended to.

Referring to a recent Council of Education Ministers meeting, the minister said the council feels there are still far too many children attending classes under trees.

Nationally, there are 404 schools with children learning under trees, she said. Limpopo has 336 and KwaZulu-Natal 68 such schools.

Pandor said the problem will be solved by March next year.

She also received a report detailing that there are 1 446 mud schools and unsafe structures nationally. The report states that 576 of these are made of asbestos.

Pandor said ”all possible mechanisms” will be explored to solve the problem, including the use of mobile classrooms and the transportation of pupils from overcrowded schools to schools that are either empty or under-utilised. — Sapa
