Soweto to get its own fresh produce market

Soweto, which turned 100 this year, will get its own fresh produce market on November 3, the Johannesburg fresh produce market said on Friday.

The market will be located at the Johannesburg city council’s offices in Diepkloof, near the Chris Hani-Baragwanath hospital.

Thousands of people, mainly women, rely on the income derived from selling small amounts of fruit and vegetables to support their families, and travelling to the market in City Deep cuts into their meagre profits.

Bernard Magabe, head of the Johannesburg fresh produce market, said: ”We are bringing the market closer to the people.”

The grand opening next Wednesday will be marked with a ”massive sale” and a parade down Old Potchefstroom road attended by a host of celebrities and Johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo. – Sapa
