Chad arrests 15 after clashes kill 12

Chad’s security forces have arrested 15 people and recovered assault rifles, knives and machetes they suspect were used in fighting in which 12 people were killed and 15 others wounded, state radio said.

A dispute between a local resident and a trader from a neighbouring community sparked off widespread fighting on Saturday in Bebeija, a town 45km from the Kome oilfield.

The suspects were arrested during investigations by a committee that included magistrates, police officials, the paramilitary security force and lawyers, the radio reported late on Monday.

Chadian Prime Minister Moussa Faki Mahamat and other senior officials met with local leaders to discuss ways of easing tensions in the town 600km south of the Chadian capital, Ndjamena, the radio said.

President Idriss Deby on Monday condemned the clashes, calling on law-enforcement officials to find those responsible and take them to court.

Bebeija is a trading town that has attracted traders and immigrants from neighbouring countries and communities since Chad began producing oil last year.

Tensions are high between long-time residents and newcomers as the costs of living rise in the town. — Sapa-AP
