Man accused of Matthews’ murder loses his wheels

Assets belonging to Donovan Moodley, who is accused of murdering Johannesburg student Leigh Matthews, were seized on Thursday, his lawyer said.

Jonathan Minnie said Moodley was notified on Thursday morning and the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) served a court order on him at the Johannesburg prison.

Moodley’s fiancé, Yeshika Singh, was also entered as a respondent on the court papers and had to hand over her engagement ring.

Moodley’s BMW 325CI, Ducati motorbike and trailer and a Toyota Tazz were seized at his family home in Alberton.

According to a statement issued by the AFU’s Camilla Botes, it was believed that Moodley bought the ring with the R50 000 ransom money he allegedly got from Matthews’ father. He allegedly also used the money to pay for the vehicles.

Minnie said he would not fight the attachment.

”It does not seem proper at the moment,” he said.

”We will wait for the trial.”

Moodley (24) was arrested early in October for the kidnapping and murder of 21-year-old Leigh Matthews. He will appear in the Randburg Regional Court again on December 3 for a possible bail application. – Sapa
