Kallis a doubtful starter for first India Test

South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis is in doubt for the first Test against India after suffering a side strain, team officials said on Tuesday.

”Kallis has a side strain and his fitness will be assessed tomorrow [Wednesday] before a decision is taken regarding his participation in the Kanpur Test,” said South Africa’s media manager Gerald de Kock.

”He has been advised not to take any more part in the ongoing match,” said De Kock on the final day of a three-day game against an Indian Board President’s XI here.

Kallis is a vital cog in the young South African side which comprises 10 players who have yet to play a Test in India.

South Africa are due to play Test matches at Kanpur from November to 24 and in Calcutta from November 28 to December 2.
