A new partner has been found for Max the Gorilla’s ”widow”, Lisa, who has been single since the death of her famous mate in May.
Makoko — on permanent loan from the Munster Zoo in Germany — was expected to arrive in South Africa on Friday, Johannesburg Zoo spokesperson Elmarie Loubser said on Wednesday.
Max achieved worldwide fame when he was shot twice while ”apprehending” a burglar in his enclosure in 1997. He died of old age on May 5 this year.
Loubser said that Makoko, who will fly directly from Frankfurt to Johannesburg, would be held in quarantine for 45 days at the zoo before being introduced to Lisa.
”It is heart-warming that Lisa will once again have a companion,” she said. – Sapa
