Obasanjo to intervene in Rwanda, DRC crisis

African Union chairperson, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, will meet in the coming days with the presidents of Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) seeking to end a feud between their two countries, his spokesperson said on Friday.

”Within the next 10 days, President Obasanjo, in his capacity as AU chairperson will meet Presidents Paul Kagame and Joseph Kabila. The venue is yet to be decided,” Oluremi Oyo said.

Obasanjo had participated Friday in the opening of the 10th summit of francophone countries in Ouagadougou in his capacity as AU chairperson, she said.

Late Thursday in Ouagadougou, Obasanjo met with Kagame, who reiterated a complaint about ”incessant incursions” from DRC into his country, Oyo said.

Obasanjo called for restraint by the two neighbouring countries and promised to begin immediate consultations, she added.

The AU chairperson and his Senegalese counterpart, Abdoulaye Wade, also met with Kagame and Kabila on Thursday.

”Kabila did not dispute the complaint and at the end of the meeting, the two neighbouring countries pledged to apply restraint and to cooperate with AU mediation efforts,” Oyo further said. – Sapa-AFP
