Union welcomes rejection of Iamgold deal

The decision by the shareholders of Gold Fields to reject the Iamgold deal is welcome news to the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the union said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Such news couldn’t have come at a better time than this period of the year when, all around us, the message of goodwill is commonplace,” the NUM said.

“This decision by the shareholders brings great joy indeed. In our view, it is a patriotic decision that seeks to protect that which is South African from being handed over to foreigners, more specifically the Canadians.

“Indeed, it is a welcome decision in that it has reaffirmed what all patriotic South Africans have maintained — that local is lekker,” said NUM secretary general Gwede Mantashe.

“Now is the time that we need to look at the broader strategy of the South African mining industry, and we think the Ministry of Minerals and Energy should convene it soon,” said Mantashe.

Since the announcement of a hostile takeover of Gold Fields by Harmony, the NUM has been consistent in pointing out that the Iamgold deal is a vote of no confidence in South Africa, and should be rejected.

“We were clear that we needed to see vibrant and strong South African mining companies that can add value towards developmental goals of our country and its economy,” the NUM said.

“We believe that it is now an opportune moment for Minister [of Minerals and Energy] Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka to convene a strategic gold-mining summit.

“In our view, such a summit should be convened sooner rather than later. Its main objectives would be to discuss and focus on a strategy that’s directed at optimising our reserves through the exploitation of natural synergies. The summit should include other role players like AngloGold Ashanti and the union,” the NUM said. — I-Net Bridge
