Blackburn Rovers sign Bafana skipper

Blackburn have confirmed the signing of South African captain Aaron Mokoena who had a trial at Ewood Park before Christmas.

The 24-year-old began training with his new team-mates on Tuesday but he needs international clearance before he can play.

Mokoena, who can play in defence or midfield, played for Ajax as a youngster before moving to Genk in Belgium. He joined Rovers for 300 000 pounds.

Mokoena, who is manager Mark Hughes’ first signing, was introduced to the Ewood Park crowd during half-time of Monday’s victory over Charlton.

”I am very excited at the prospect of the opportunity of playing in the English Premiership,” Mokoena told the club’s website.

”It feels right for me, it will be great experience and, at 24, I felt right for the challenge it presents. It’s a dream come true.

”My first priority is to try to get into the first team. There is a big personal challenge ahead for me, but it’s really exciting.” – Sapa-AFP
