SA soccer great dies

The memorial service of the late South African soccer great George Shigo will take place at Mbolekwa Sports Complex in Atteridgeville in Pretoria on Thursday between 5pm and 8am, according to Shigo’s former teammate Patrick ”Let Them Dance” Molala.

The service is expected to be attended by various soccer personalities.

Shigo, who was popularly known as ”Bantala” during his players at Pretoria Callies, died in Atteridgeville on New Years’ Day. He was in and out of hospital, suffering from sugar diabetes, high blood pressure and hypertension.

Shigo was admitted to the Kalafong Hospital intensive care section on December 10. He is survived by his wife, two children and two sisters.

Prominent soccer leaders like Irvin Khoza, Patrice Motsepe and Kaizer Motaung have described his death as a big loss to South African football.

Shigo will be buried in Atteridgeville on Saturday.

SA to play Sudan

Meanwhile, the Football Association of Sudan has released its Under-17 national squad to play against Majimbos of South Africa in the African Junior Championships qualifier at FNB Stadium on Saturday at 3pm.
