They didn’t see it coming

Police in Istanbul have arrested a married couple after a sting operation in which officers posed as customers who wanted their horoscope read, Hurriyet newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Undercover officers deposited 200 lira (about R870) into a bank account and used the receipt as proof of payment for a session with two of Turkey’s most famous mediums, Metin and Rezzan Kiraz.

As soon as the seance began, the undercover officers arrested the couple.

Speaking as she was being taken away, Rezzan Kiraz said the police were acting on a complaint from someone whose fortune they had refused to tell on a television programme.

The couple were released pending charges being laid after giving a statement to prosecutors.

Despite fortune telling being illegal in Turkey, the Kiraz couple are often guests on Turkish entertainment programmes. — Sapa-DPA
