An errant husband who agreed to give his wife $12 (R72) for every hour he stayed out past midnight has been ordered by a court to pay her hundreds of dollars, a news report said on Thursday.
The couple in Chongqing, central China, struck the agreement to give her peace of mind after she caught him cheating, the Hong Kong edition of the China Daily said.
The husband then agreed to pay her 100 yuan (R72) for every hour he failed to come home between midnight and 7am, the newspaper said.
The pact failed to curb his cheating ways, however, and after paying up on one occasion in July 2003, he gave her IOUs totalling more than 4 000 yuan (R2 880) for his late nights out.
A Chongqing court has now granted the woman a divorce and ordered the husband to pay up on all the IOU notes given to his wife, the newspaper reported.
The wife declared outside court that her case should serve as a lesson to unfaithful men. — Sapa-DPA
