Temporary shelter and relieve was being arranged on Saturday night for about 8 000 people left homeless after a fire razed about 1 500 shelters in the Joe Slovo informal settlement and parts of Langa.
Cape Town emergency services spokesperson Johann Minnie said an information centre would be established at the Isilimela Comprehensive School to assist affected individuals with relief issues.
”We will start registering displaced persons on Sunday,” he said.
Minnie said meals would be provided later on Saturday night.
An unnamed infant perished in Saturday’s fire and several people, including firefighters and another two children, were injured in the conflagration.
Meanwhile, a fire at the Sentinel outlook on Table Mountain was contained with personnel remaining on the scene throughout the night to monitor flare-ups.
At Muizenberg, a fire that had been burning intermittently since Thursday and which had destroyed about 2 000ha of fynbos was also contained, with final damping-down operations under way on Saturday night.
