Jo’burg metro cops bust nine of their own

Johannesburg Metro Police have arrested nine staff members in their crackdown against corruption, spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said on Wednesday. He said that investigations were finalised on Tuesday and by Wednesday, two of corrupt policemen had appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

The other seven were scheduled to appear in the Roodepoort and Randburg courts on Thursday.

Minnaar said a clerk in Randburg had allegedly been registering vehicles without roadworthy certificates for bribes of between R150 and R300. In Roodepoort, two women and a man had allegedly accepted fraudulent cheques to register and licence vehicles, and had taken R18 000 in bribes.

At Langlaagte testing station, a man had allegedly registered nine vehicles without registration certificates and at the Johannesburg testing station, two cashiers allegedly took money from the Metro Police from income derived from motorists’ fines.

At the Metro Police’s specialised training unit, an employee allegedly also drew a salary of R143 000 from another job, which he was forbidden to do in terms of his contract. A speed checking officer was allegedly caught ”red-handed” receiving a bribe of R20 from a motorist at a speed check point in Main Reef Road. – Sapa
