Absa wins for Bushbucks, Cosmos, Chiefs, Rangers

Bushbucks booked a place in the last 16 of the Absa Cup after beating Bloemfontein Centic six-five on penalties in a closely contested match in East London on Saturday.

Bucks opened the score in the 25th minute through a scorcher from Sibusiso Mazibuko after connecting a cross from Bulelani Mapross, putting the half-time score at 1-0.

With only four minutes to go, Celtic equalised through Gary Merahe, who capitalised on the poor clearance by the Bushbucks defence, taking the game to extra time.

In the 101st minute, Bucks increased the lead to 2-1 through Manelisi Gomoshe, after connecting the pass from Jonathan Armogan. With only one minute to go, Celtic came back for the second time through Siyabonga Nkosi following a well-taken free kick on the D-line, taking the game to penalties.

Manning Rangers win

Manning Rangers beat Pietersburg Pillars 4-3 in their Absa Cup match at Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday night.

The Pillars — who are coached by Jerry ”Legs of Thunder” Skosana, the former Orlando Pirates striker — surprisingly led 2-1 at half-time.

The first goal came in the 25th minute when Vusumuzi Madimane scored an easy goal. After 13 minutes, Teko Modise scored the second goal before Alton Meiring pushed the ball into the net in the 45th minute.

The Mighty Maulers, under veteran coach Clive ”The Dog” Barker, levelled matters in the 46th minute when Edson Minga scored the goal after Meiring crossed the ball on the right-hand side.

After that goal, Meiring scored the brace but a minute later the Mighty Maulers were unlucky when Minga received a red card.

After that incident, Rangers substituted Grant Igesund for Tebogo Tsiu, who scored the fourth goal in the 75th minute.

After numerous attempts, former Mamelodi Sundowns player Thabang Rammapudu scored the third goal for his side in the 78th minute.

Cosmos win in boring match

Lamontville Golden Arrows were beaten 1-0 by Jomo Cosmos in a boring Absa Cup match at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The only goal of the match was scored by Itumeleng Sexwale in the 85th minute. It was a free kick resulting from Arrows stalwart defender Kapamba Chintu, who mishandled an on-form Chris Katongo outside the box.

Before that goal, both clubs missed chances in the second half. The players who missed a clear chance were former South African Under-23 player Nkosinathi Nhleko, Sipho Sephadi, Sam Magalefa, Hilton Cunha and Morgan Gould.

The Durban side played without their key players Lucky ”Y2K” Sibeko, Justice Sithole and Zambian goalkeeper Davies Phiri due to injuries.

Easy victory for Kaizer Chiefs

Kaiser Chiefs easily advanced to the last 16 of the Absa Cup when they beat minnows Bilika Allo Stars 4-0 in a one-sided match at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday.

Despite the defeat, Stars gave a good account of themselves, as they denied the much more experienced Chiefs the opportunity to score more goals in the first half.

The visitors broke the ice 10 minutes before the interval when the speedy David Radebe scored in the 36th minute. Simphiwe Mbambo increased the tally five minutes into the second half before Radebe completed his brace in the 73rd minute.

Lucky Mzizi, who is not a regular at Chiefs, scored the fourth goal for Ted Dimitru’s side in the 84th minute. — Sapa
