Study shows gang rape is rife in Johannesburg

Over a quarter of the rapes reported in Johannesburg’s inner city were gang rapes, a study to be released on International Women’s Day has found.

”We found that more than one in four of rapes reported at these stations involved multiple perpetrators,” the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) said in a statement on Friday.

The results were from a study by the gender-based violence programme of the CSVR which analysed 162 rapes reported during one year at six police stations serving the inner city.

The Democratic Alliance said it was appalled by the results of the study.

”Joburg is attempting to make a comeback as a world-class city. Stats like this do nothing to bring people back,” said DA inner city councillor Ann Barnes in a statement on Friday.

”… women need to take every precaution to prevent this terrible crime from happening to them and that they need to continue to come forward to report it so that the CSVR can continue to provide their valuable information,” she said.

The results of the study will be released on International Women’s Day on March 8. – Sapa
