Local mobile operator MTN announced on Tuesday that it has joined the Proudly South African campaign.
As its members, the campaign lists a number of the country’s original initiatives, companies and organisations — both civil and corporate — who have all pledged to serve the citizens of South Africa with the best products and services.
“Although our company has global reach in terms of our operations in Africa and our plans to enter other markets in developing countries, we were born and bred in South Africa and there cannot be a more worthy ideal than to embrace being proudly South African,” MTN South Africa MD Maanda Manyatshe said.
“As part of the MTN family of over 3 500 people, we are all committed to our country, proud of its achievements and confident of its future.”
Campaign chairperson and radio personality Tim Modise said the reason it took a long time for the cell group to join was that another telecommunications group, Telkom, was already in the fold as a founder member. Having the mobile company joining in at the time could have led to some conflict of interests.
“But now the campaign is entering a new phase and there are certain activities we can exclusively negotiate with MTN and jointly carry out. This wouldn’t have been possible back then,” he added.
Now in its fourth year and with more than 2 400 members, the campaign seeks to promote local companies, products and services that are helping to create jobs and economic growth in South Africa. — I-Net Bridge
