Wits University caused a big upset when they defeated Kaizer Chiefs 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out in their Absa Cup second round clash played at the FNB stadium on Sunday.
Amakhosi skipper Patrick Mabedi missed the final penalty when he shot wide after his teammate Tinashe Nengomasha and Wits’s Gareth Devine had their penalty kicks saved.
There was no score after extra time.
The home side did the majority of attacking. It took two splendid saves from goalkeeper Wayne Roberts to keep his side in the game.
Roberts did well in the 24th minute when he blocked a pile-driver from Amakhosi dangerman Collins Mbesuma. Then five minutes later Zambian striker Mbesuma shot over the Wits crossbar.
In the 37th minute Roberts managed to push a free kick by John Moshoeu onto his post and away to safety.
Wits only shot at goal in the first half came from Sipho Mngomezulu, whose header flew over the Chiefs crossbar in the 22nd minute.
The second half continued in the same manner, with Wits defending and Chiefs attacking. But Amakhosi failed to steer a path through the hard working and uncompromising Wits defence.
Moshoeu had a free kick saved by Roberts in the 51st minute and the veteran midfielder was wide with another free kick in the 81st minute. Wits only attempt at breaking the deadlock came from Reagan Noble, whose shot forced keeper Rowan Fernendez to make a timely save in the 83rd minute.
Roberts again rescued his side with three brilliant saves in extra time. The Wits keeper did well to deny substitute Simphiwe Mbambo in the 102nd minute. Then he pulled of two more stunning from Cyril Nzama (109th minute) and Mbesuma (110th minute). – Sapa
