ANC branch chairperson attacked in KZN

An African National Congress branch chairperson in KwaZulu-Natal was shot and wounded on Thursday night, the party said.

ANC provincial spokesperson Mtholephi Mthimkhulu said on Friday that Nqobizwe Magwaza, chairperson of one of the Ulundi branches, ”miraculously escaped death” when he was attacked by two balaclava-clad gunmen.

He said Magwaza and his two sons were walking down a street in Section C, Ulundi, at about 8pm on Thursday when they passed a school and the two attackers opened fire.

Mthimkhulu said five shots were fired and the attackers fled after Magwaza was hit in the arm.

Earlier this month, a member of the Zulu royal family and the chairperson of the ANC branch in Nongoma, Prince Thulani Zulu, was killed in a drive-by shooting.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier S’bu Ndebele has appointed a commission of inquiry to investigate the violence.

The Inkatha Freedom Party said five of its members have been killed in the past six months, and so far no one has been prosecuted. — Sapa
