Zackie Achmat recovering after heart attack

The Treatment Action Campaign’s chairperson, Zackie Achmat, was recovering well after suffering a heart attack just before the start of the Easter weekend, the TAC’s electronic newsletter reported on Monday.

”This is a signal that I have to start improving my lifestyle by doing more exercise and working more regular hours,” said Achmat in the newsletter.

He suffered the heart attack last Thursday and will be taking a month’s rest, after working hard ”without a break under high stress” for the last month on both TAC work and the Cosatu Save Jobs Coalition.

Achmat’s doctor, Steve Andrews, said his patient was receiving excellent medical care and was expected to recover with rest and an adequate rehabilitation programme.

The TAC requested that Achmat’s privacy be respected while he recovers. – Sapa
