Iraqi children go back to school

Zeena Hussein (11) sits in an empty classroom at the Qairuran school in Kirkuk, Iraq. Teachers at the school said it has been open for days but only a handful of students have shown up for class. The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) director Carol Bellamy said ‘One of the best things you can do to bring some normality back to a community is for children to go back to school. We are deeply concerned about supporting the schools opening as quickly as possible and we will provide supplies and training.” A huge number of Iraq’s schools were damaged during the war, by civilians taking refuge there, by troops and by vandals, she said.
