Rugby fan ‘jumps’ from Loftus stadium stands

A young rugby supporter was seriously injured when he fell from a stand at the Loftus rugby stadium in Pretoria at the weekend, the News24 website reported on Monday.

It said Braam van Wyk (21) was admitted to the Muelmed hospital in a serious condition on Saturday after a three-storey plunge on to a concrete parking area.

Paramedics at the Bulls’ Super 12 match against the Chiefs stabilised him before taking him to the hospital.

The hospital said on Sunday night that Van Wyk’s parents had asked that no information about his condition be given to the media.

Loftus stadium manager Hugo Kemp said circumstances surrounding the young man’s fall were a mystery.

”Thousands of people visit Loftus and nothing like this has happened before,” he said.

”It is very bad; I don’t understand this.”

Witnesses reported they were chatting outside one of the boxes at about 6pm on Saturday when the accident happened.

”He [Van Wyk] came out of one of the other boxes and one of his friends remarked he had celebrated his 21st the day before.

”We thought he wasn’t feeling well because he was leaning slightly forward.”

Van Wyk apparently did not reply when a friend asked him if he was alright.

News24 quoted a witness as saying: ”He [Van Wyk] grabbed a hold of the railing, as if he wanted to gain momentum, and then he jumped.” – Sapa
