Violence wins the day

I had just completed my teacher training in 1995 and was looking forward to teaching. In 1996 I was appointed at Petrusville High School. I looked forward to implementing what I had learned at college.

The principal asked me to take care of the assembly on Monday morning. I wanted to involve my whole class of Grade 11 learners.

That morning, a few learners and I were rehearsing for assembly before school when we heard screaming and we rushed outside, only to find two groups fighting. I was terrified, because it was my first term as a teacher and I had never experienced anything like this before. All sorts of weapons were produced.

Our principal calmed them down and ordered them back to their respective classrooms. Because of this there was no assembly that day, which resulted in me being unable to share with others what I had learnt.

It was a pity because soon after that I accepted a post at another school. I was sorry and disappointed because the learners could have learnt a lot.
