Current Springbok and Gwent Dragons fullback Percy Montgomery has signed a two-year contract to play for the Sharks.
Amid rumours and speculation doing the rounds, the Sharks are unable to confirm the facts until such time as his signature is placed on the dotted line.
Montgomery will officially join the Sharks on June 1. However, provided he is selected to play for the Springboks, he will only start with the team after the Tri-Nations in August.
He left South Africa in 2002 to join the Gwent Dragons (then Newport) in Wales and had a happy association with the club. Prior to that he played for Western Province from 1996 to 2002 and made his Springbok debut against the British Isles in 1997.
Montgomery rejoined the Springbok set up last year and has played 61 tests for
South Africa.
”My family and I have enjoyed the time we have spent at Newport but we are very excited about going to KwaZulu-Natal. I am looking forward to playing for the Sharks and it will be a huge challenge and honour. I have thoroughly enjoyed my rugby in Wales, but this is a great opportunity for me to experience rugby back home and in a new environment,” said Montgomery.
”I would like to take this opportunity to thank the administrator’s, coaches and players who have supported me and especially the fans in Wales.”
Montgomery will continue to play for the Gwent Dragons until the end of their season in May when he will return to South Africa. – Sapa
