New Fiesta roars with extra power

Ford has launched a new high-performance version of its excellent Fiesta in South Africa. This two-litre Ford Fiesta ST completes Ford’s performance ST (Sports Technologies) range, alongside the Mondeo ST220 and the Focus ST170.

Apart from lashings of extra power, the new car offers upgraded suspension and brakes to give it road-holding commensurate with its extra performance.

The Fiesta ST uses Ford’s new all-aluminium 110kW Duratec HE engine, which also produces a healthy dollop of torque, with 190Nm being on tap from 4 500rpm.

The factory claims that no other car in this price range can match the Fiesta in terms of outright performance. It accelerates from 0 to 100kph in just 8,3 seconds, and boasts a top speed of 208kph, while fuel consumption (combined cycle) is claimed to be just 7,8 litres/100km.

The engine’s electronic throttle control permits quicker throttle response and less NVH intrusion to pedals, its knock sensor controls pre-detonation for longer engine life, and its performance exhaust system offers more power plus a better sound.

The Fiesta ST uses a revised five-speed gearbox with a unique short-ratio gear set and short-shift gear mechanism. First, second and third gears have been shot-blasted and the complete differential is made from forged components for added strength to enable it to cope with the extra power. The half-shafts have also been reinforced, for the same reason.

Other changes to the ST over the standard Fiesta are numerous. For instance, it has a stiffened anti-roll bar and rear twist beam for sportier handling and better control. Damper ratings have been revised for a tauter ride, and the steering has been sharpened to allow more direct and accurate turning.

Braking is enhanced by the use of larger calipers and pads from the Focus ST170, clamping larger 253mm rear disks. ABS and EBD are standard, as are sexy 17″ light alloy wheels with low-profile Pirelli rubber. The factory claims that the Fiesta ST has set some remarkably quick times around the infamous “Track Seven” at Ford’s Lommel proving grounds in Belgium, eclipsing even those set by the mighty turbo-charged Focus RS.

Inside the car, you’ll find deep bolstered leather and cloth sports seats, as well as an ST-branded, three-spoke, leather-rimmed steering wheel, drilled-metal sports pedals and a stubby sports gear-lever.

There are, of course, all the other safety and comfort features found in the less-performance-biased 1,6-litre luxury models.

The Ford Fiesta ST is priced at R169 500 inclusive of VAT. We haven’t driven it yet, but are looking forward to the experience. If it’s as good as the other cars bearing the ST badging, it’s sure to be a winner.
