Sri Lanka cricket in crisis

The crisis engulfing Sri Lankan cricket deepened on Tuesday as police raided the offices of the suspended governing body and its chief handed in his resignation.

Witnesses said armed police forced their way into the offices of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), whose official recognition is on hold amid allegations of financial irregularities. The police were accompanied by members of the interim body appointed to oversee the sport.

The raid puts the interim committee in charge of the Colombo offices, which SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala had sealed after sending the staff on paid leave.

Meanwhile, SLC chief Duleep Mendis, a former Test captain, handed in his resignation.

”He feels harassed by the interim committee and the police, as he is called for so many inquiries,” said SLC spokesperson Ray Illangakoon.

Sports Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga withdrew SLC’s official recognition in March, citing financial mismanagement, and appointed the interim committee.

SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala, who still considers himself in charge of cricket in Sri Lanka, obtained a temporary court injunction against the minister’s decision.

But the International Cricket Council last week recognised the interim committee after seeking legal advice. — Sapa-AFP
