Springbok coach Jake White has said his class of 2005 reflects well on transformation and that the balance of youth and experience in the squad is a key factor.
Addressing a media conference in Cape Town on Monday, White said he is confident that the squad of 33 will rise to the occasion and represent their country with pride, in spite of the poor showing of most South African teams in the Vodacom Super 12.
”I am certain that these players will want to repay the faith the selectors have in them,” said White. ”Last year, we were in a similar situation after a bad spell during the World Cup. We were down, but the players showed great resolve and went on to perform well.
”Regarding transformation, I am very happy with the composition, and everyone in the team is there on merit. I have faith in all the guys in the squad.”
The Springbok mentor is very pleased with the fact that many of the players in the squad played together in junior ranks, with many of them boasting good pedigree from South African under-19 and under-21 experience.
”We have a large pool of talent in South Africa. Every year, new great players emerge, and that is good. These young players mingle well and learn a great deal from experienced players like Os du Randt and Percy Montgomery.”
White said he is expecting a tough season ahead.
”The second year is always difficult [after a good performance in the first year]. Every fixture will be tough because every team will want to beat us. We have to be strong.”
Addressing the question of players who have been invited for tests at the training camp, White said this is an indication that the door is open for those who show they are ready for international duty this season.
”We have invited these players for tests to see if they are ready for Springbok duty. Those that show results much better than those already in the squad will definitely be given a chance to be considered for selection.”
Commenting on the success of the Bulls campaign so far, White said he is thrilled with their performance.
”The way they played on Saturday against the Stormers is plausible. I really wish them all the best in the remainder of their campaign.” — Sapa
