Absa on Wednesday warned job seekers against a ”malicious” hoax e-mail advertising 600 positions at the banking group.
Hundreds of jobless people reportedly converged on the Absa branch on the corner of Kruis and Market streets, Johannesburg, with their CVs at 9am on Wednesday to apply for the posts, only to find they had been conned.
They were all responding to the e-mail that reportedly claimed the positions had become available through the bank’s merger with Barclays Bank and that the only requirement is matric.
A man who identified himself only as Collin and who reportedly collected their CVs was taken into the Absa building by security guards when the angry crowd turned on him.
Absa views the widely spread e-mail as ”malicious” and urges the public to disregard it, said Absa’s group executive of people management, Lawrence Mlotshwa.
Recruitment for positions within the Absa group is done by its agencies. Vacancies are also advertised on its website.
Mlotshwa advised prospective job candidates to be on the lookout for media advertisements. — Sapa
