Man shot and killed in his driveway in Greenside

A man died while being taken to hospital following a hijacking in Greenside on Saturday night, Johannesburg police said on Sunday.

One attacker involved in the hijacking died in an accident in the victim’s vehicle. The second attacker was injured in the crash, said Superintendent Chris Wilken.

He said the 50-year-old man was approached by two men while standing in his driveway shortly before 8pm.

”A suspect shot the man in the chest before the two fled in the man’s bakkie.”

Wilken said an on-duty policeman travelling in an unmarked police vehicle in Brixton, noticed the driver of a bakkie skipping a few red traffic lights.

”The policeman, unaware of the Greenside hijacking, decided to follow the bakkie. At the corner of Perth and Portland streets in Westdene, the bakkie collided with another bakkie.”

The attacker lost control of the bakkie; it hit barriers in the centre of the road and then overturned. The man died at the scene.

The other suspect was injured and taken to hospital under police guard. A 9mm firearm was confiscated.

The driver of the other bakkie was not hurt. Wilken said the victim’s family have requested that his name not be disclosed. – Sapa
