Govt settles R4m land claim

An estimated R4-million land claim settlement agreement has been signed between the Northern Cape provincial agriculture department and the community of Smauswane outside Kuruman, SABC news reported on Saturday.

According to the report, the community was forcibly removed from the land in 1942.

The land measuring about 3 000 hectares, will be used by about 130 households for agricultural and livestock farming.

The land claims commission will provide grants worth about half a million rand — while the agriculture department will provide assistance through its agricultural support programme to turn the settlement of the claim into a sustainable exercise. – Sapa
