A curry chef in central England claimed on Saturday to have rustled up the world’s biggest curry — a sizzling 10-tonne chicken tikka masala cooked in a swimming-pool-sized pot.
Vast quantities of chicken, vegetables, spices and curry powder were chopped and sliced in advance for the bid by Abdul Salam, owner of the Eastern Eye restaurant in Lichfield, Staffordshire, to bust the world record.
“I was up at 4am to start cooking so I’m pretty tired, but it tastes fantastic,” sighed a happy but exhausted Salam, who shot to curry stardom with a record-breaking curry creation five years ago.
“I was pleased with my three-tonne curry in 2000, but I want this record to stand for tens, if not hundreds, of years,” he said.
Dozens of helpers worked to create the spicy treat, mixing six tonnes of vegetables and chicken with a tonne of spices, two tonnes of water and a tonne of oil, inside a custom-built 10m stainless-steel vat.
Portions of the curry — the highlight of Lichfield’s annual festival — were to be sold to raise money for a Bangladesh-based charity. — AFP
