President Thabo Mbeki’s spokesperson Bheki Khumalo has resigned, a statement issued by the Presidency confirmed on Thursday afternoon.
Khumalo has served as the president’s spokesperson for five years. He will step down at the end of July to take up a senior executive post in the private sector.
”The Presidency wishes to thank Mr Khumalo publicly for a remarkably successful tenure in what is an extremely exacting position,” the statement said.
”He has acquitted himself with dedication and uncompromising loyalty, and we wish him every success in his future career.
”Bheki, in providing support to the often punishing schedules we have to work to, gave his best at all times, often at great personal sacrifice to himself and his family. I’m sure that his decision to change careers was not taken lightly. In that he has our support,” said Mbeki.
Khumalo said he has loved every moment of his job and has developed ”the highest respect” for Mbeki and a great admiration for his consideration towards those who work for him.
”It has been the experience of my life, these past five years serving the president. I say farewell in a spirit of deep gratitude for having been given this remarkable opportunity to work for the chief. We have had a good innings together,” he said.
The Presidency is making the necessary arrangements in view of Khumalo’s departure, Thursday’s statement said, and an announcement in this regard will be made at an appropriate time.
