Two KwaZulu-Natal transport department clerks were arrested on charges of issuing fraudulent driving and learner’s licences at Empangeni on the north coast on Friday.
On Saturday, provincial transport minister Bheki Cele said his department will arrest everyone linked to the scam.
”Our zero tolerance to 100% compliance applies in all sectors of transport. We have no mercy to crime-related issues,” Cele said.
He said members of the traffic and transport unit also searched the homes of the clerks, who were based at the Empangeni Road Traffic Inspectorate offices.
Cele said they confiscated 186 applications for driver’s licences, two driver’s licences, 162 learner’s licences, four temporary driver’s licences, 36 professional public driving permits and 13 identity documents from one house.
He called on all those who are in possession of an illegal learner’s or driver’s licence to hand it back to the police ”because we will hunt them down and arrest them”.
Investigations are continuing and the suspects are expected to appear in court on Monday, Cele said. — Sapa
