Three men arrested and released in connection with a series of abductions and rapes in Northampton, near London were not South African, British police said on Friday.
”I must make it absolutely clear that the three men arrested and released on bail today on the suspicion of rape are not South African,” said Northampton police spokesperson Sarah Thompson.
Thompson said however that it was against police policy to reveal the men’s nationalities.
”The South African connection which turned out not to exist, was only one of a large number of possibilities being investigated in the case.”
She said they were arrested on Thursday and released on Friday pending further investigations into the case.
Police expected to make more arrests, said Thompson.
The Citizen newspaper said on Friday that the gang had struck terror into Northamptonshire in past weeks, prompting police to warn women against going out alone at night.
The group targeted single women. They bundled their victims into cars before taking them to remote spots where they were gang-raped, said The Citizen. – Sapa
