Limpopo police on Wednesday arrested 18 people who claim to be doctors in Bushbuckridge, following a tip-off that they were targeting the elderly.
Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe said it was believed that so-called doctors would set up a ”pay-point” and then send a group of young women to recruit the elderly.
”The girls then tell the elderly that if they are sick there are doctors around the corner who will check them for a small fee.”
Ngoepe said the ”doctors” would then examine the patients and give them tablets and medicines.
The crime and intelligence unit arrested 18 people between the ages of 28 and 47, all from Mokopane.
The 18 — 15 women and three men — have been charged with fraud and are expected to appear in court on October 7.
The police appealed to the elderly in the area who think that they may have been victims of bogus doctors to report the incident to their local police station. – Sapa
